San Diego's very own Sunflower is a rare, perennial blooming shrub that is perfect in tough sundrenched locations, and sloped, dry terrain. It will provide many months of bright yellow sunflower type flowers. Bahiopsis laciniata, now renamed Bahiopsis laciniata, is attractive to butterflies, hummingbirds, and various other pollinators. The pale green, leathery leaves create a dense thicket, frequented by birds looking for seeds. This shrub will bring activity and color to gardens and is especially attractive planted among other sun-loving, drought tolerant perennials such as, Sages, Penstemons and Woolly Blue Curls. This plant responds well to dead heading and pruning and has even been known to successfully provide a colorful low hedge.
