Plant Highlights

This is a medium shrub with unusal, showy red flowers that are highly attractive to hummingbirds. It is slow-growing and reaches around 3' high before spreading out to a width of nearly 6'. Its dark green leaves are like tight miniature ferns, overshadowed by red flowers that are reminiscent of a feather duster (hence the name, Fairy Duster). The seed pods are like mini-snow peas which explode when ripe. Native to sandy washes, flats, and hillsides in the Cape region of Baja California. They are evergreen; it is reported that they will lose their leaves if drought or cold stressed, and in their native habitat bloom after spring and fall rains.

I have had 2 of these in the interior hot inland empire area for years now and I love them. They are 5.5' tall, grow in a vase shape being much wider at the top, expanding it's width at base over the years. They flower nearly constantly in our mild winter climate and do not go dormant. They are always covered in an abundance of pollinators. These bushes buzz year-round with life, require no water once established, and can self-seed when the wildlife don't eat all the seeds. A hummingbird favorite, butterflies and moths visit, bees present nearly 24/7 as it flowers in seasons when there are few other flower sources around. I especially love watching the acrobatics of the little local birds as they eat the seeds. These bushes will bring the yard to life all year long. HIGHLY recommend. Maintenance free, takes extreme heat and cold, drought tolerant, and a hundred times prettier than a bottle brush.
