Plant Highlights

This medium sized shrub has attractive purple blooms and is excellent for erosion control/soil stabilization. it typically grows along stream banks and prefers moist but not permanently wet situations. Its many flowers are small, purple to dark blue with yellow stamen that extend beyond the foliage in spike-like clusters several inches long from April to June. Small 3/8 inch long fruit appear after flowering. False Indigo is winter deciduous. This plant attracts bees, butterflies and other pollinators and is a larval host to the Southern Dogface Butterfly.
