Plant Highlights

This California fuchsia has fuzzy gray foliage that sets its orange-red flowers off to perfection. This fuchsia is also a favorite with hummingbirds during the summer when the plant is in bloom. 'Uvas Canyon' is the tallest of the California fuchsias, with a deeper red flower than the other native fuchsias. It is also perfect as a border plant or in a garden. Despite its origins in San Jose it has proven to be very reliable both on the coast and inland in Southern California. As with most other California fuchsias, cut back hard after its summer long bloom cycle.

Hello Native Plant Growers, Recently I came across some mention of Epilobium Uvas Canyon on various websites, and I thought it would be fun to explain where it came from, and ask anyone interested to let me know how they heard about it. And then I'll mentiuon some of it's characteristics. In 1985 I bought a house in La Honda, California and started planting natives and volunteering up at Yerba Buena Nursery on Skyline. I then started a little nursery called Hummingbird Gardens from 1985 to 1990, when I moved to Lake County and started another Native Plant nursery. Uvas Canyon was one of my stock plants I brought along. I collected it, I am guessing around 1986-7, off Uvas Canyon Road in San Jose. An immediate favorite of mine, as it was very hardy, spread easily and was quite tall. Silver grey leaves and very red flowers. In the late 80's, I took plants to Las Pilitas Nursery in Santa Margarita, and also California Flora Nursery in Fulton. Bert Wilson then grew it and it's on their plant list. This epilobium is so hardy, that I have the very same base plant in the ground in hot Lake County, now,, surviving 35 years. . It got planted, and then some years of neglect and no water. It has similar characteristics to U.C. hybrid, and Chaparral Silver, but is taller than Chaparral Silver.I do caution people that it is unruly and aggressive and loves to spread. I am still growing and propagating native plants and I'm always very interested in their origins and who collected them. I will proudly claim "Uvas Canyon" as one I slipped into the nursery trade I would love to know how you ran across it Karen Sullivan Hummingbird Gardens 1985-1990 Lake County Natives 1990 to 2025
