Plant Highlights

Deer grass is an evergreen grass that grows in mounding clumps. Spikes of pale yellow to purple flower stems grow 2' above the grass blades. This grass is very versatile. It looks good in medians or along roads or driveways, but is equally at home in large meadows, or amongst shrubs where its contrasting shape and texture is desirable. Plant it between boulders for a dry streambed effect. Deer Grass is easy to grow and maintain. It is best if it is cut back to about 6" in the winter, allowing vibrant new growth n the spring. The flower stems have traditionally been used by the California Native Americans to make coiled baskets.
