Plant Highlights

Whether it’s known as Globe Gilia, Blue Gilia, or Blue Thimble Flower, Gilia capitata is a plant with presence. Ferny, lacey leaves cloud around the base of this tall, branching annual plant, while slender 1 to 2 foot stalks rise above to show spheres of clustered lavender-blue blooms. Globe Gilia also boasts rare BLUE pollen at the center of each flower, an endearing quirk of its plant family, Polemoniaceae. Globe Gilia loves sunshine and is very heat tolerant; it is beautiful but tough and does well on rocky, hot slopes, blooming heavily spring through summer from about April until July. Gilia capitata can grow up to three feet high, and is a favorite of bees and butterflies. A charming addition to any garden, it adds a “cottage garden” look with minimal effort. Self-seeds for next year’s enjoyment!
